Volume 2: Fall 2004 Issue- "Flight #707"

Flight #707

With the little bit of free time I had the past couple of weeks I watched a bit of TV... making a concerted effort to catch up on popular culture. Clicking the remote control past the news, I felt inspired from the Olympics and witnessed the fusion of musical genres and politics on MTV's Video Music Awards. Our country is definitely trying to soar at the moment.

Our Fall issue is designed to motivate you to take Flight as well. As a new season begins, let the changing leaves symbolize a new season in your life... your next destination.

Danielle's article, Bush vs. Kerry, gives you the framework to make your voice heard. Angela's motivational literature reviews develop your psyche to prepare for takeoff, and Kaplan (our newest partner) arms prospectives with GMAT advice. Kevin brings a spin to the perceived notion of black physiology and white intellect. Marquis interviews Bain & Company's Head of Diversity, Modupe Akinola, a multi-faceted young woman who radiates a warmth in her interview that envelopes the reader. We even made sure the Graffiti section was relevant to the theme of Flight/Empowerment... figuring out that men don't all want the traditional housewife. Contrary to popular belief, many guys prefer the sassy, independent woman who has her own goals and brings home extra income to boot.

So many things have happened over the summer. When I didn't get off the waitlist of a school that I thought I had wanted to attend, my grandmother consoled me. "...when one door closes another opens. I am praying for you" Her deep, raspy voice revealing wisdom and patience trademarked by the elderly. Between her and my Faith, I kept sane this summer and still believe that everything happens for a reason. Danielle hit me with an invitation to speak at Michigan's Women in Business Conference which will be held on October 1. Rendel from Columbia's BBSA invited MBA Diversity to sponsor their Corporate Diversity Roundtable at their upcoming conference. Me, speak? I usually prefer the comfort and solace behind the scenes...shunning the bright lights and scrutiny up front and center. Had to overcome paralyzing fear for a while. The "What If" factor kicked into high gear.

Finally, after pinpointing the source of my angst, I have decided to view Michigan's and Columbia's conferences as an opportunity to step out from behind the curtains and connect on another level. They are doors that have opened through Grace. And yes, I will have to conquer my fear of flying to get there.

What steps are you taking to reach your goals? How do you deal with failure? Your fear of flying may have to do with a career move, overcoming an important exam (like the GMAT or LSAT), social anxiety, or even sticking to a more healthier diet.

Whatever your obstacle may be, we all must remember that life is about constant change and growth. It is the law of evolution...life's cycle.

Let us conquer our fear of flying together.

K.D.
