Modernity of Business Leadership

Fall/Winter 2005

I have NO idea where we found the time to do this issue, being that we've all started our respective schools. But for some reason, I was compelled to peek up from the Econ book when the Hurricane Katrina disaster unfolded.

It had me thinking about Leadership.

What really makes a good leader?

Well, this rhetorical question shaped the Fall/Winter 2005 issue
for The NetWork.

To me, it is following Jonathan's journey in China... an American who steps out of his comfort zone to learn about a new culture; he became a more effective leader in the process. Or knowing that Dr. Peter Reagan is offering a service to help the quantitatively-challenged obtain their MBA degree, going above and beyond his classroom. It's seeing Alli Myatt from Wharton make it to the Inaugural Diversity Symposium on crutches to represent her school and give advice to prospectives. They don't walk around puffed up... trumpeting about what they're gonna do. They just do it. This is leadership to me.

To the MBADiversity members' families affected by the hurricane, continue to hang in there. There is aid pouring in now, as our society has found our hearts, and subsequently, our voices in the vortex of this tragic time to help our fellow citizens- rich, working class, AND poor.

This past August, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet our sponsoring schools' representatives, MBADiversity Fellows and members, and our supporters. It was a good ole time. Next year plans to be even better, as the need for building community and healing is finally being integrated within the business world. Yes, we can be powerful business leaders. And, yes, we can get there together, using our vitality and power to patch the wounds within our society.

So, for those of you contemplating a MBA now or for the future, don't lose track of your goal. See the value of higher education as a passport to great opportunities when coupled with your own talent and determination to make a positive difference.

We leave you with this challenge, as we head back to our classes.

Right now is a critical time for America, and as the country's future business and community leaders, we are the hope for its future.

We'll see you next year.

Be blessed,
K.D.
