My first final is over! My classmates and I promptly hit the local bars in celebration. Mind you: we didn't know our grades on the final yet, but we were celebrating like we'd just won the lottery.
I've actually already gotten my grade for the final, and your girl is patting herself on the back. Now to see in a week what kind of overall grade I have in Statistics. Can't wait! I should tell you that most of us don't care deeply about our grades. It's all about taking from a class what you think you'll need in your years after CBS, and leaving the rest behind. No grade will be able to capture how well someone does that.
This weekend will be ridiculous because there are 2 exams left to study for. Wish me luck!!
November 5th is fast approaching, people. Before we know it, the day of CBS' Black Business Student Association's conference will be here, and like all other important days it will probably go by very quickly.
All of us in BBSA are getting really psyched about it because we've landed some awesome corporate sponsors and panelists. There are BBSA folks who're living, breathing, eating this conference and the latest word is that many of the real estate heavy hitters in NYC will indeed be in attendance. I suspect that many industries will be well represented, but personally, it'll be truly awesome to see CBS alums reunite and catch up.
This will be my very first conference, and to be honest, I wish I'd known about it last year...it would've meant amazing exposure to AdCom, students, alums etc. I maybe wouldn't have had to worry as much as I wound up doing. But then again, y'all know when your girl submitted her app, right? I was late as HELL! Oh, and just for the record: I do NOT recommend said strategy for getting in.
In the meantime, I'm really starting to study for 2 final exams. This is sort of the first time I'm actually studying since getting here...there was only time to check my 200 e-mails/day, prepare for class, go to class, complete assignments, attend corporate presentations and get to know classmates. Workload from (some) other professors has lightened a bit so now we can add some studying to the mix. Speaking of which - I gots to go.
Someone's let corporate America loose on Columbia's campus. Every day there are several corporate presentations taking place suddenly...whether they're of the wine and cheese variety (these are preferred) or the byol (bring your own lunch!) variety. A few of them are even of the hot food and cocktails variety, and needless to say, these are way ok with me. What?? I'm a broke student!
Seriously, these events have seriously cut into everyone's study time. It was hard enough to find time to study before, but now? It's terrible. With followups to send out and new relationships to carefully manage and biz casual clothing to get to the cleaner's? Forget it. Still, it's easier to digest when you remember that you're not the only one overwhelmed...almost all of your classmates are as well. Also, it's even bearable if you keep your priorities in sight. My priority? To land the best position in my industry of choice that I can. The first companies to touch down are the investment banks and consulting firms.
Had my first 2 mid-terms and managed to not flunk! Yay! Seriously, it wasn't a piece of cake but we all did quite a bit of work for these first exams.
btw, fun facts: my drinking tolerance has re-blossomed tremendously. I'm quite proud of it actually. Almost as good as in college! Also, my body does pretty well on 4 hours sleep now. Wonders never cease. (Notice I didn't say anything about my brain...)
